Introduction:
On May 2, 2024, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) released a notification regarding the permission of students who choose basic Mathematics in Class 10th to pursue Mathematics in Class 11th and 12th for the academic session 2024–25. In this article, we have listed the important details below.
Understanding The CBSE Board Circular
In 2019, the Central Board of Secondary Education had introduced the two levels of Mathematics subjects for all India Secondary School Examinations. Two of them are standard Mathematics and basic Mathematics. Standard Mathematics is for those students who wish to pursue the mathematics subject in the Class 11th and 12th and basic Mathematics is for those students who do not want to seek the mathematics subject in Class 11th and 12th. As a result, those who choose a basic Mathematics subject are tested at a lower level compared to standard Mathematics.
According to the circular dated January 10, 2019, candidates who studied standard Mathematics in Class 10th can choose Mathematics in Class 11th. However, candidates who opted for basic Mathematics were previously instructed to opt only for applied Mathematics in Class 11th.
In the past, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CBSE permitted 10th Class students with basic Mathematics to pursue the mathematics subject in Class 11th and 12th. With the implementation of NEP (New Education Policy) and proposed changes in the academic year 2024–25, the Central Board of Secondary Education has decided to extend this relaxation further.
What’s New for Academic Session 2024–25?
Now, for the students of academic session 2024–25, the CBSE Board has decided to continue the relaxation for candidates who opted for Mathematics Basic in Class 10th. This simply means that the students are now allowed to take Mathematics in Class 11th. However, there are some conditions mentioned by the CBSE authorities, which are mentioned below.
● Candidates with basic Mathematics have to prove that they can pursue Mathematics in Class 11th. Additionally, it is instructed to the head of the institution/school to check whether the student has the ability and aptitude to pursue Mathematics in Class 11th or not.
Important Note for Schools/Institutions and Students
Schools and Institutions are instructed to inform parents and students about the relaxation and take the necessary actions accordingly. However, when the class X students fill out the subjects for the academic session 2024–25, once the subjects are chosen and listed in LOC, no changes will be allowed. And the policy dates from January 10, 2019, should be strictly followed.
CBSE Board to let Class 10 students who opt for Basic Math also take regular Math in Class 11 is great news. It means students have more options for learning, fitting with the new educational rules. It helps students follow their interests while keeping learning flexible and fair for everyone.
